Western Region Schools have embraced the 13th edition of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Forum which is set to be hosted in Accra, Ghana next month.
Ghana will be hosting the rest of the world in Accra, for the 2018 edition of the DofE.
“The Award is available to all 14-24 year olds and is the world’s leading youth achievement award” – said the official award website.
12 schools from the western region have already given their consent to participate in the award;
1. Takoradi Senior High School
2. Archbishop Porter Girls S.H.S
3. Methodist Senior High School
4. Half Assini Senior High school
5. Fijai Senior High school.
6. St. Johns School
7. Sekondi College
8. Shama Senior High school
9. Adiembra Senior High School
10. Ghana Secondary Technical School
11. Bompeh Secondary Technical School
12. St. Augustine Senior High School – Bogoso
The schools will be taken through some exercises for which the winner will be announced.
The Award is comprised of three levels and four sections. Participants complete all four sections at each level in order to achieve their Award. At Gold level, participants also complete a Residential Project.
The DofE has four categories which seek to inspire and straighten youths to become responsible citizens in the future.
Voluntary Service
The Service section of the Award encourages young people to volunteer their time to and understand the benefits of this service to their community.
Skills
The Skills section of the Award encourages the development of personal interests and practical and social skills.
Physical Recreation
The Physical Recreation section of the Award encourages young people to participate in sport and other physical recreation for the improvement of health and fitness.
Adventurous Journey
The Adventurous Journey section encourages a sense of adventure whilst undertaking a team journey or expedition. As part of a small team, participants will plan, train for and undertake a journey with a defined purpose in an unfamiliar environment.
Gold Residential Project
The Gold Residential Project, completed only at Gold level, aims to broaden participants’ horizons through involvement with others in a residential setting.
The DofE will be starting next month and they are already familiarizing with the five projects listed above.
