A 13-year old girl in the Western North Region has been able to create a computer game after one week of intensive ICT training.
Ella, part of the beneficiaries of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization flagship programme dubbed “Girl-In-ICT”, was able to demonstrate to the sector minister Ursula Owusu Ekuful and her team how she was able to create the game.[ads2]
This was during the Minister’s seven-day tour to the region to visit the centers where the programme is taking place which include Sefwi Nsawora, Sefwi Akontombra and Suaman on September 10, 2021.
Expressing her excitement over the remarkable achievement by Ella, Ursula Owusu Ekuful said that, “I believe that if we better understand the role of technology and the opportunities therein and find a better way to communicate it to our young girls while at the same time showcasing female role models in the field, we stand a better chance of churning out more technology-focused young women. “[ads3]
Participants of the initiative who were excited stated that it was the first time they were using a computer.
Mrs. Owusu Ekuful who was enthused with what Ella has been able to done after just seven days of training, promised the participants more devices to aid them in their quest to study ICT.
The minister took the opportunity to monitor the government’s rural Telephony Project aimed at bridging the country’s yawning digital divide in the region.[ads4]
The programme, since it was initiated has been embraced by the corporate entities with telecommunication giant, MTN supporting it with a whopping Gh¢10m.
The telecommunication company with the growth of female participation in ICT at heart, made the donation as part of activities to mark its 25th anniversary.
The Minister of Communication and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu Ekuful recounted her conviction to scale up the Girls in ICT initiative but for financing barriers, such remains a dream and however thanked MTN Ghana for favorably considering the ministry’s request and pledged to utilise the support for which it was given.
