A five-year-old girl drowned while playing with her friends in an abandoned galamsey pit in Manso Nkwanta, in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.
Witnesses claim that the girl unintentionally fell into the wet excavation site while the children were playing next to the pit.
Upon realizing the danger, her friends immediately alerted the community, prompting a desperate search effort.
An extensive search and rescue operation was organized by the young people of Manso Nkwanta. Despite their greatest efforts, the search ultimately came to a tragic end when they discovered the girl’s lifeless body.
Residents have been calling for steps to be taken to secure these dangerous locations on several occasions because they continue to pose a serious risk to the community, especially to children.
