The Government of Ghana and South Korea have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for funding of 500,000 improved cook stoves (ICS) to be distributed for free among our rural folks who depend on wood fuel as source of energy for cooking
The MOU was signed in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea on November 1, 2018
The Deputy minister for energy in charge of Finance and Infrastructure, Hon Joseph Cudjoe signed on behalf of the Ghana Government
As a win-win transaction, Hon Joseph Cudjoe who doubles as the MP for Effia Constituency explains the project would benefit both Governments
“This is a win-win transaction between Ghana and Korea because the Republic of South Korea through its Climate Change Center (CCC) stand to gain from counting the carbon emission reduction (CER) achieved through the project as their contribution to carbon reduction in the global environment whilst Ghana stands to gain from the jobs to be created through production of the stoves locally, distribution by Ghanaians as well as training in the use of the stoves” he told Connect FM’s OMANBAPA morning show host Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson
Other benefits of the project according to Hon Cudjoe are the free cost of the stoves to the rural users as well as reduced use of fuel wood for energy which would have a positive effect of saving our forests and vegetation cover
The Deputy Energy Minister recounts saving our forest is so important to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and that is why the President has embarked on a massive afforestation project
The improved cook stoves free distribution project has been planned to cover 5 year period with the first 500,000 stoves to be installed from first half of 2019
“After a successful first phase, a second phase will follow with more stoves to be installed” Hon Joseph Cudjoe explains
The Effia MP says the Koreans stands ready to spend up to US$10 million through this MOU
Connect FM’s checks at the Ministry of Energy indicate the project was the initiative of the Effia MP with the blessing of his Minister, Hon John Peter Amewu
