Derrick Kwakye populary known as ‘Asoka’ was crowned the overall champion in the Eastern regional Armwrestling Challenge over the weekend.
The night saw the Jackson Park brought to a deadlock as residents in Koforidua and it’s environs trooped to the center in their numbers to witness the much anticipated competition organized by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation with Accra Brewery Limited as sponsors through their beer brand, Eagle Extra Stout.
High profile personalities including the MCE for New Juaben South, Isaac Appau Gyesi alongside Mr. Micheal Okyere Baafi of Ghana Free Zones Authority among other notable personalities were all present to support the competition.
In the female category, energetic Yasmin Kadri showed enough muscles to nail down Victoria Zatey to clinch gold whiles Rose Avanyo went home with the silver medal.
The men’s Under 60kg which was keenly contested ended with Elliot Lamptey beating Listowel Sampah in the final showdown for the gold medal.
Isaac Nii Amugi with a dazzling performance outwit Richard Tanye in the men’s 70Kg to win the gold medal while Edward Asamoah pinched Francis Adamayi in the 90Kg in the final showdown with Issa Kunya clasping the bronze medal with ease.
The competition was climaxed with the 100+Kg which was the highlight. Derrick Kwakye defeated Mark Antwi for the overall ultimate while SWAG Armwrestler of the Year, Haruna Tahiru won the bronze medal.
Speaking after the competition, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, thanked the people of Koforidua for responding massively to their call and urged them to continue playing the sport, the reason for the challenge.
He continued that, the technical department of the Federation will assess the performances of the participants and add deserving ones to the national armwrestling team as they prepare to defend their continental title in Mali.
Mr. John Baptiste Akado, Brand Manager for Eagle Extra Stout who was excited at the level of organisation and turnout even after the heavy downpour, reiterated on his continued support for the Armwrestling Federation.
