The Ghana Olympic Committee on Saturday, June 22 hosted the 2019 edition of the Olympic Day Run in Eastern region capital, Koforidua.
The exercise which was under the theme ‘ Move, Learn and Discover’ was patronized by some selected schools in Koforidua, Keep-fit Clubs,and the general public.
The Olympic Day Run held annually in/around June by over 160 countries across the globe was first hosted on June 22, 1948 with nine National Olympic Committees participating. The aim is to promote fitness, well-being and the Olympic values.
Speaking at the event held at the Jackson Park in Koforidua, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah said “Olympic Day Run is a day that has been put together by the International Olympic Committee to install values in our children that is why our focus is always on schools”.
He explained that, Olympic is not just about sport, but it’s about all sporting activities such as football, handball, basketball, volleyball among other activities.
Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah however used the opportunity and advised the youth to be hardworking, respect, selflessness and patriotic in the society.
He ended by expressing his gratitude to the Eastern regional Minister, the National Sports Authority, the participating schools and Keep-fit Clubs for taking part in the five kilometers walk from Asokore to Jackson Park in Koforidua.
At the end of the celebration, the participants were given certificates from the Ghana Olympic Committee as well as products from the sponsors of the event.
In attendance was the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Eric Kwakye Darfour, the Ghana Olympic Committee President, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, delegates from National Sports Authority, the Eastern Regional Sports Co-ordination.
The 2019 edition of the Olympic Day Run was sponsored by Toyota Ghana, Twellium Industries and Indomie.
