Asante Kotoko is currently in the market trying to beef-up their squad for the 2019-20 season. The club has confirmed signings of Kevin Andoh, Justice Blay and Kwame Baah.
Word on the hill has it that Asante Kotoko has completed discussions with Charles Akunnor and the latter’s contract has been terminated and he’s offered a role as the sporting director.
°Who’s fronting these signings?
°The new director of football?
°The unannounced new coach or Charles Akunnor?
Charles Akunnor will be replaced in the coming days and he’s told that there’s a director of football position available for him. Akunnor is loved by many and won a lot of sympathy after leading Asante Kotoko to the NC Special Tier 1 title, but perhaps there’s a greater good, but is this how to go about it?
As much as it’s a tried and tested plan which has yielded Manchester City the needed result, Asante Kotoko is going about it rather awkwardly.
At Manchester City, in 2013 that Roberto Mancini was sent packing due to his inability to align with the sporting director/director of football role after a trophy-less season. The Premier League club appointed Manuel Pelligrini on the word of Txiki Begiristain, who occupied the newly created office for the sporting director. His role was to see to the transfers of the club whiles the manager concentrates on the football and the players.
Many, including chief editor of Manchester Evening News, Stuart Brennan has pointed at City’s decision to create the office for the sporting director as a major role for the team’s success or maybe key. And in his latest article said, it is a major reason Man City is dominating Man United now – since United aren’t ready to forgo the era that Alex Ferguson saw to everything for the club.
At Manchester City now, Pep Guardiola, the head coach doesn’t have the first and ultimate say as to the ins and outs of the club – that’s Txiki’s job – and the head coach only recommend and think it through with the director of football.
Recently, it was rumoured that United have considered Ferdinand, Fletcher and Evra to form a committee to oversee the club’s transfer with Ed Woodward once again being in charge for this season – the new trend perhaps.
So perhaps, Asante Kotoko is adopting similar strategy, but will the environment be harmonious enough for the new coach and Akunnor? And who’s actually seeing to the ins and outs now?
