The Black Queens of Ghana with a stunning performance have won the first edition of the WAFU Women’s Cup of Nations competition.
Janet Egyir’s rose highest to connect to Portia Boakye’s freekick just 3 minutes into the game which was enough for the Black Queens to sail past the Elephants of Cote D’voire.
The maiden edition of the WAFU Zone B Women’s Cup of Nations saw eight nations battling out for the ultimate at the capital of Cote D’voire, Abidjan.
Ghana bettered by host Cote D’voire on the opening day won all remaining group games against Burkina Faso and Niger, a semifinal clash against top ranked Nigeria before making a repeat with Cote D’voire in the final.
The Black Queens led by yet-to-be-confirm Mercy Tagoe named a squad mixed with fresh limbs to shook all sealings with surprises.
The team scored a resounding 14 goals and conceded 3 in 5 games.
After the game Captain Portia Boakye was named as goal Black Queen scoring four goals and 3 assist(directly involved in 7 goals), while the goal scorer Janet Egyir who scored 3 goals in the tournament was awarded player of the tournament.
Ghana will prepare for the hosting of the 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations(AWCON) which will also serve as qualification to the world cup(France 2019).
