The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has denied media reports that the Public Universities Bill has been passed by Parliament.
It was reported by several media outlets that the bill has finally been passed by Parliament after an approval but the minister has rebuffed the reportage.[ads2]
“For the avoidance of doubt, please note that the Public Universities Bill has not been passed by Parliament.- Oppong Nkrumah on tweeted.
Meanwhile, the bill has reached the consideration stage after it was approved at the second reading in Parliament on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.[ads3]
About the Public Universities Bill
The bill seeks to harmonize the finances, administration and governance structure of public universities in Ghana.
Whem passes by Parliament, the Public Universities Bill will give the government of Ghana the power to appoint the majority of members of the University Council.
This will give much power to the University Council to appoint and dismiss public university officials.[ads4]
It will also impose power in the president of the republic to dissolve the University Council which will now have the power to appoint a chancellor and will be able to control the finances of the university and determine the allocation of funds …[ads5]
