The Nzema East Municipal Chief Executive, Frank Okpenyen has seized smoked dolphins that were washed ashore Brawire Akyenim coast last week.
According to reports reaching Kyfilla.com, some fishmongers in Axim who went and killed some of the dolphins were smoking the for commercial purpose.[ads2]
Unfortunately for the fishmongers, the MCE with the support of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Police moved in to expropriate all the smoked washed-ashore dolphins.
When the team arrived, they found a basket full of already smoked dolphins together with about 20 dead dolphins. They subsequently seized the dead sea mammals and the smoked ones.
Speaking to the media, the MCE stated that he is working harder to retrieve all the dolphins that were washed ashore but taken by individuals to their homes for sale or consumption.[ads3]
He said authorities are of the conviction that more of the dolphins are in the custody of individuals in the community as it estimates that about 132 of the dolphins that were washed ashore on Easter Sunday are in the hands of residents.
Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Fisheries Commission has released 38 of the dolphins that were washed ashore at Axim-Bewire last Sunday back into the sea.
The acting Western Regional Director of Fisheries, Mr Arafat Alhassan, said for now, they had buried what they were able to retrieve from the community.[ads4]
However, 25 of the marine mammals that were found dead in the communities have been buried.
Officials said an estimated 120 dolphins were washed ashore alive, but they were weak and unable to swim back to their habitat.[ads5]
