The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong, has advised Ghanaian Artisans to cultivate a business mindset necessary to running successful and sustainable private enterprises.
Speaking at the registration and data collection exercise for the 2021 GNPC Foundation/Aseda Foundation Skilled Artisans Project in Bekwai, Dr. Sarpong said that success in every economic activity hinge on the highest display of professionalism and competence and hence the need for young people to seek continuous personal development in their various areas of interests while upholding positive business etiquettes.
Reminding the Artisans on the importance of being certified by recognized institutions and bodies, he said many Artisans have lost out on job opportunities due to their inability to prove their competence or proficiency in their fields and entreated them to prepare to sit for the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) Examination in August in order to compete favorably for job opportunities with those who have them.[ads4]
He said the Skilled Artisans Project, with support from the Business Advisory Centre (BAC) of the Ghana Enterprises Agency, will provide training for artisans on important course models such as Book-keeping, Marketing/ Sales, Branding, Customer Relations, Attitude to Work, Safety at Work and Entrepreneurship and asked the youth to take advantage of the opportunities to hone their skills.
DR. Sarpong reaffirmed GNPC’s commitment to ensuring that communities and people across the Country benefit from Ghana’s oil exploration activities. He said while oil was discovered in the Nzema area of the Western Region, the construction a road there will mostly serve the people there. “If we also build a school block in your community or invest in your skills development many kilometers from the center of our oil activities, you and your children would have also benefitted from Ghana’s oil business and that is why the Foundation exists,” he added.
Member of Parliamemt for Bekwai Constituency and 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Joseph Osei Owusu, praised GNPC’s efforts across the country and recounted several projects funded in his constituency by the Corporation. He asked the youth to apply themselves to the opportunities made possible by the Foundation to realize their potentials of becoming the nation’s productive force.[ads1]
The GNPC Foundation is currently registering to admit some 2000 youths from the southern sector of Ghana into the 2021 edition of the Skilled Artisan Project. The program is expected to take the artisans through various refresher trainings in the fields in plumbing, fashion, carpentry, auto-mechanics, general electrical, aluminum fabrication and others. They will be supported to take the NVTI exams and will each receive a set of tools relevant to their skills to help set them up for their entrepreneurial journeys.
