The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta has shockingly disclosed that renovation works currently ongoing at the Sekondi Sports Stadium is ninety percent complete.
This was contained in the 2022 Budget Statement presented to Parliament by the Finance Minister on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.[ads2]
The state-owned edifice has been shut down for over year for renovation works after eleven years of zero refurbishment exercise.
The stadium was built under the regime of former President John Agyekum Kuffuor to co-host the 2008 African Cup of Nations held in Ghana and since then has not undergo any renovation exercise.[ads3]
The roofing of stadium was in a deplorable state, the seats an eyesore with the washroom nothing to write home about.
It was closed down in May, 2020 to pave way for renovation works with the then Youth and Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah revealing that government will pump GH¢17,969,447.10 to the first phase of the renovations with the amount for the second phase to be announced later.[ads4]
The contractors, Cisdan Company Limited were given twelve months to complete the job, which means the stadium should have been opened for activities in May this year.
Per our checks, works on the stadium have been halted for months with seat and the roofing (which were the main problems) yet to be fixed, light yet to be connected.
This makes it quiet astonishing whether the Finance Minister had the right information.
