Tourism and sports are inextricably linked and mutually beneficial. Sports, whether professional, amateur, or recreational, need a significant amount of travel to play and compete in many locations and countries. Major athletic events, such as the Olympic Games, football and rugby championships, have become great tourist attractions in their own right, contributing significantly to the host destination’s tourism image.
Sports tourism is one of the tourist industry’s fastest growing segments. Whether or not sports are the primary goal of the trip, an increasing number of visitors want to participate in sporting activities while on vacation. Sporting events of all sizes and types attract visitors as participants or spectators, and locations strive to differentiate themselves by incorporating local flavors into them in order to provide unique local experiences.
