Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the Vice Presidential candidate of the NDC in the 2020 elections has refuted claims that John Mahama abolished teacher trainee allowance during his administration.
This comes as confusing to many as former president, John Mahama in one of his campaign tours prior to the 2016 elections justified the cancellation of the allowance for teachers.
But whilst addressing members of the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) student wing of the NDC at the Wesley College in Kumasi on Sunday April 24, Professor Opoku Agyemang who was once a Minister of Education indicated that claims that the allowances were removed hence their difficulties in school were lies and should be ignored.
“Education should never be handled as a matter of expediency, that is dangerous. You must make the right decisions because education is about the future. All of you sitting here young people, it is about your future.
“I need to emphasize that we never scrapped the allowance, we never took anybody’s money from them. All those who were receiving their allowances received them till they ended. So the people who came on air and said because of allowance they cannot pay their fees they were lying. I was saddened by that that young people could do that because nobody took their money from them. We gave the loan that was about twice what they were getting as allowance because we felt they needed loans”, she added…
