Goldstar Air (Wings Of Ghana), a wholly-owned Ghanaian airline, has donated assorted items to the Young Aviators team in support of their participation in the Real World Design Challenge National Competition in Ghana in August 2022 and the International competition in April 2023, which will provide Ghanaian youth with tremendous opportunities to unearth and unleash their talents in order to pursue or develop interest in careers in aviation and other STEM fields with a strong emphasis on young womens.
The assorted items were presented by Mr Edwin Lamptey (Cabin crew supervisor, Goldstar Air) and received by Mr. Seth Konadu (CEO, Young Aviators Ghana) at the opening ceremony of the three-day Bootcamp which took place on April 22, 2021 at the Global Prayer Center in Weija Accra, near Talents Royal International School.
The World aerospace competition for High Schoolers’ real-world design challenge was launched in Ghana on October 1, 2020, at the Ghana Civil Aviation Training Academy (GATA), with late former aviation minister,
Hon. Joseph Kofi Addah and Dr. Ralph Coppola, President of RKC International & Founder of RWDC, as keynote speakers. Among the other dignified guest speakers were Mr. Eric Bannerman (Executive Chairman, Goldstar Air), Mr. Jeffery Coppola (RWDC Program Manager), Jack OliverRendler (Design Advisor of EdAcme & Mentor/Judge RWDC Ghana), Dr. Victor Osei (Aviation Consultant), Ms Elizabeth Sasu (CEO, GH Aviation) Mr. Richard Kyereh (Avaition Specialist), Ms Edem Attipoe (Aircraft Marshaller GACL), Mr. Seth Konadu Awuah (CEO YAG & Country Rep, RWDC Ghana) and Ms. Philipa Sarfo (Aerospace Engineer.)
The primary goal of the Aerospace Design and Applications Boot Camp is to prepare students who will compete in the Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) National and International Competitions in 2022 to solve the challenge assigned to them, with the potential of unearthing and unleashing talents with the potential to be trained as the Next Generation of Ghanaian Aviation Professionals which falls in line with Goldstar Air’s vision.
There is a national need for more students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), particularly engineering. The first step in training more engineers is to enroll a large number of students in the educational process. Pilots, Aerospace Engineers,
Flight Dispatchers, Cabin Crew, and other aviation professionals are in high demand globally. As a result, there is a need for this platform to raise the next generation of Ghanaian aviation professionals.
This year’s Real World Design Challenge Bootcamp has the theme “Raising the next generation of STEM innovators through aerospace education.”
Dr.Thomas Mensah, a Ghanaian-American chemical engineer and inventor who contributed to the development of fiber optics and nanotechnology, will be the main guest speaker. He has 14 patents and was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors in the United States in 2015. He is also the CEO and President of Georgia Aerospace Systems, and he helped to establish Ghana’s Silicon Valley at the Kofi Annan Centre for Excellence in ICT. Lng. Dr. Lucy Agyepong Associate, Mr Julian Bennett, Ms. Felicia Edem Attipoe, Ms. Vera Metzler-Hinson, Mrs. Elizabeth Sasu, and Mr. Foster Oppong are among the other highly rated Mentors and Guest Speakers.
This entails 8 weeks of intensive online and onsite coaching, mentoring, classroom lectures, practical exercises, and field trips directly related to the challenge for that year. The National Challenge will take place in Accra in August 2022, and the International Challenge will take place in Washington, DC, in April 2023. The Real World Design Challenge is an annual competition for High School Students in grades 9-12, equivalent to JHS 3 –SHS 3 in Ghana. Students solve real-world engineering problems with the assistance of both local and international mentors, with the goal of bringing a real-world work environment into the classroom. The program is designed to meet real-world industry standards. Students use real tools, take on real roles, work on real problems, and make genuine contributions.
The top ten national competition winners will represent Ghana at the international competition in Washington, DC.
Students in high schools and technical schools will learn how to design a plane using the most up-to-date Professional Engineering Software.
They use the engineering process to apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills learned in school. Teams improve their technical writing skills by documenting their work in an 80-page Engineering Design Notebook that is reviewed by professional engineers. Students learn the technical elements of plane design such as team composition, division of labor and engagement, system design, mission planning and capabilities, conceptual, preliminary and detailed design, aerodynamic characterization selection of system components, aircraft geometric design and details, systems of operational considerations, and components of complete flight such as vehicle weight and balance, manoeuvre analysis, and They also learn how to create a business case for their system, which includes things like amortizing system costs, market assessment, cost benefit analysis and justification, and identifying alternative commercial applications. They learn to give presentations that are graded based on their organization, presentation skills, design process, technical understanding, effective use of mentors, design viability, and business case development.
BENEFITS TO STUDENT PARTICIPANTS
1. Each member of the National winning team receives a prize, including a
scholarship to study STEM in Ghana.
2. Prepares students for the workforce of the twenty-first century, with a strong emphasis on girls.
3. Increase students’ confidence in selecting STEM courses for undergraduate
and graduate degrees, ensuring a long-term National STEM workforce.
4. Prepares students for ongoing career advancement with companies such as
Boeing, Airbus, FAA, NASA, General Electric, Bombardier, and Tesla.
5. Prepares students with STEM and business skills to represent their school
in the RWDC National Competition and go on to represent their school as a finalist in international competitions.
6. Mentoring and coaching from local and international Aerospace
Professionals from the FAA, NASA, Airbus, Boeing, General Electric,
Bombardier, and other organizations.
7. A $50,000 educational scholarship will be awarded to each member of the
international winning team to attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Goldstar Air is ambitious of providing scheduled and non-scheduled passenger air service initially to twelve (12) destinations worldwide, namely, London, Dubai, Baltimore Washington International, Guangzhou, Providence International Airport, Lagos, Abidjan, Monrovia, Freetown, Conakry, Banjul and Dakar. Direct non-stop services will be deployed where necessary.
The Ghanaian airline will construct a 250 x 250 x 75 hangar in the Northern Regional capital of Tamale for aircraft maintenance and refurbishment, as well as use the Tamale airport as our second hub. The airline is planning the ub Goldstar City project, which will be located in Tamale and will contain housing, a training school, and other amenities for our engineers, pilots, cabin crew, and other staff”. When fully functioning, this facility will create new commercial prospects while also promoting northern Ghana to the rest of the world.

accommodations, fuel suppliers, and so on will be employed by the company.
