The One District One Factory initiative will be abolished if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) return to power in 2024 says Tamale Central legislator, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.[ads2]
According to the NDC lawmaker, the initiative by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is just a mere slogan which is yielding no results.
“It is nothing but a slogan,” the former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday November 5.
“The 1D1F is something that when the NDC takes over we will throw out. The way it is in this form is not helping.”
The initiative was the vision of President Akufo-Addo to change the nature of Ghana’s economy from one which is dependent on import and export of raw material to one which is focused on manufacturing, value addition and export of processed goods. These raw materials are largely found in the districts which would have otherwise gone waste.
The initiative is private sector led with the aim of creating the necessary conducive environment for the businesses to access funding from financial institutions and other support services from government agencies to establish factories.[ads3]
The initiative was to enable Ghanaian entrepreneurs to own the companies, operate them and bear all the risks and rewards of the projects.
President Akufo-Addo launched the initiative in August, 2017 at Ekumfi in the Central Region.
The President after the launching, cut sod for the commencement of the first factory, a pineapple/ fruit processing factory at Nanabeng in the Central Region of Ghana.[ads4]
Fast word, President Akufo-Addo in a state of the nation address in March this year said out of a total of two hundred and seventy-eight (278) 1D1F projects at various stages of implementation in all the sixteen (16) regions, one hundred and six (106) factories are currently operational, one hundred and forty-eight (148) are under construction, while twenty-four (24) projects are at mobilization stage.[ads5]
