Organised Labour has announced an indefinite strike starting from Tuesday, December 27, 2022.[ads2]
This is as a result of the introduction of the Debt Exchange Programme by government to stabilize the economy.
The spokesperson of the Labour, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, who doubles as the Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), explained that the decision to go on strike is as a result of the government refusal to listen to their request to have pensions of workers exempted from the Programme.[ads3]
“We are asking government to exempt us from the debt exchange programme,” he told journalists at a press conference in Accra on Monday, December 19.
“We have already told the world that if government doesn’t do that, we will advise ourselves. Today, we are here to announce the advice.
“The advice is very simple. We have all agreed that because the government has refused to grant our request, we have decided firmly that all workers of Ghana are going to strike on December 27, 2022, and we will be on strike until our demands are met.”[ads4]
The Debt Exchange programme introduced by the government forms part of measures to stabilize the country’s economic challenges.
The Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is confident the programme will help resolve the country’s economic crisis in order to create jobs and protect income of the people.
The programme was officially launched in Accra on Monday December 5, 2022.[ads5]
