The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George has entreated President Akufo-Addo to append his signature to make it a law if parliament passes the anti-LGBTQ Bill.[ads2]
According to Sam George who is a huge sponsor of the Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, it will be political suicidal and a dent on the legacy of President Akufo-Addo if he fails to sign the bill when brought before him.
“The President will be requested by Parliament to sign the bill into law. It will be politically suicidal, and it will mark the sound of a dead mill on his abysmal government if he said he was not going to sign that bill into law. That will be the beginning of the collapse of his government and his legacy. And so I don’t want to have that thought because I think that his advisers and handlers will advise him accordingly,” the Ningo Prampram MP said on Eyewitness News.[ads3]
This comes after the Vice President of the USA, Kamala Harris in a joint press conference at the Jubilee when she landed in Ghana for a three-day visit made a comment that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQI) are human right issues.
Kamala Harris said that she is an advocate when it comes to fighting and supporting for the cause of human rights including rights of LGBTQs.
“For the American press who are here, you know that a great deal of work in my career has been to address human rights issues, equality issues across the globe including as well as the LGBTQ community and I feel very strongly about the importance of supporting freedom and supporting and fighting for quality among all people.”[ads4]
But answering a question put to him at the Jubilee House on Monday, March 27, President Akufo-Addo confirmed that the bill is currently before Parliament, which will decide on it, but most of its provisions are being fine-tuned.
“It hasn’t been passed, so the statement that there is a legislation in Ghana to that effect is not accurate,” he said.
“Parliament is dealing with it and at the end of the process, I will come in,” he added.[ads5]
