Five Ghana Premier League clubs will receive compensation as Qatar’s 2022 World Cup benefits from the USD 209 million disbursed.
The Accra-based club was represented by striker Daniel Afriyie-Barnieh at the World Cup and will receive $219,008.70. Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, King Faisal, Dreams Football Club, and Steadfast Football Club are the beneficiaries of the program.
Kotoko, also represented by Danlad Ibrahim, earned $200,757.97. The reports also show Steadfast FC will get $109,504.72. Dreams FC and King Faisal will receive $18,250.72 each.
The compensation aims to acknowledge the clubs’ role in developing and nurturing Ghana’s global players. Ghana, however, suffered a group phase exit with just three points. The Black Stars recorded a win against South Korea and two defeats against Portugal and Uruguay.

Clubs also get rewarded financially from the proceeds from the tournament. This is done through member associations for clubs that make their players available for their respective national teams. The initiative was first introduced ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The financial reward is given to the clubs the player was registered with during the World Cup qualifiers and during the tournament.

The Club Benefits Program will see USD 209 million distributed to clubs across the world for player contributions to Qatar in 2022. The same amount was distributed following the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
In comparison, the 2014 FIFA World Cup benefits share was USD 70 million. This was an increase from the USD 40 million allocated for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
