Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong amassed the larger votes with Alan Kyeremanteng finishing third in the New Patriotic Party’s Super Delegates Congress held on Saturday, August 26, 2022 across the country where over 900 delegates voted.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) super delegates conference with a total of 629 votes representing 68.15 percent.
Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong came in second position with 132 votes representing 14.30 percent, while former Trade Minister, Alan Kyeremateng placed 3rd with 95 votes representing 10.29 percent.
Former Agriculture Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Addai Nimo placed 4th and 5th with 36 and 9 votes respectively.
It is the first time in the NPP presidential race for Ken Agyapong, the same as Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President.
But first-timers, Ken Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia have overtaken him by getting more endorsements.
The November showdown will witness over 200, 000 delegates from the NPP from all polling stations meeting to elect a flagbearer to face off with the opposition National Democratic Congress’s John Dramani Mahama in the December 7, 2024, general elections.
The results mean that Agyapong has qualified for the NPP’s presidential primaries in November, along with Bawumia.
The November primaries will be a major test for Bawumia and Agyapong.
They will need to win the support of over 200,000 delegates from across the country in order to become the NPP’s flagbearer.
The winner of the primaries will then face off against the opposition National Democratic Congress’s John Dramani Mahama in the December 2024 general election.
His strong showing in the super delegates conference suggests that he could be a dark horse in the November primaries.
The November primaries are shaping up to be a close race.
The outcome of the primaries will have a major impact on the 2024 general election.
