Former Black Star gaffer, Dr. James Kwasi Appiah, has been granted permission by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to join the Sudan national team as their head coach.
Kwesi Appiah was Kotoko’s technical director before being released by the life patron of the Porcupine Warriors. This happened after Kwesi Appiah had a successful meeting with Otumfuo.
It was reported on Wednesday, September 20, that the experienced gaffer had been offered the Sudan male national team head coaching job, but it later emerged that the move hadn’t fully materialized.
However, the club announced on its official website, “The life patron of Asante Kotoko, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has blessed our technical director, Kwasi Appiah, to accept the role as Head Coach of the Sudan national team.” This blessing followed a meeting in London between His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and a former left-back of the club.
Despite this new role, our former captain and left-back will continue to serve as the Technical Director of Kotoko and will also be competing for the upcoming GFA Executive Committee Membership position. Those are statements on the club’s website.
The 63-year-old tactician will lead the one-time African champions for the next three years. Kwesi Appiah has coached the Blackstars two times, between 2017 and 2020.
He took Ghana to the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and was also an assistant coach in 2010 when Ghana reached the quarter-finals in South Africa. He was also head coach of the Sudanese club Al Khartoum.
On the contrary, Appiah has been attached to Kenpong Football Academy as a sporting director for the past three years.
