Former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales has been suspended for three years following an investigation into his conduct during the Women’s World Cup final.
Rubiales celebrated Spain’s 1-0 win over England in Australia and caused controversy by kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips as she received her medal.
In a later interview, the Pachuca CF player admitted, “I didn’t like it,” before releasing a statement in which she said she had been pressured by the federation to say she consented to the kiss.
Rubiales was suspended by FIFA for 90 days and finally resigned last month after refusing to do so in a bizarre press conference. Rubiales has now been banned from all football-related activities for three years.
A FIFA statement said: “Today Mr. Rubiales was informed of the terms of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s decision. Following the relevant provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, he has 10 days to request a reasoned decision, which, if requested, will be published on legal.fifa.com.
The decision can still be appealed before the FIFA Appeals Committee. “FIFA reiterates its absolute commitment to respect and protect the integrity of all people and ensure that the fundamental rules of decent conduct are respected.”
