Ghana Football Association Executive Council member Dr. Randy Abbey has revealed his thoughts on the lackluster performance of the Black Stars in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The Black Stars, who were aiming to capture their fifth continental title, gave away a two-goal lead in the last Group B encounter against Mozambique and had to settle for a draw after six minutes of added time.
Ghana’s early elimination from the continental event was caused by this defeat, which brought back memories of their early departure from the group stage of the Cameroon AFCON 2021.
Mr. Abbey publicly acknowledged the team’s unhappiness in not living up to expectations when speaking on the performance to the media. He also expressed the team’s collective dissatisfaction, rage, and despair.
He emphasized the need for the squad to quickly reassemble and take a different tack in order to redeem themselves despite the obvious disappointment.
“There is a lot of disappointment, there is a lot of anger, and there is a lot of frustration. Well, what can we do?“We’ve let everybody down. We need to pick up the pieces, try and do things differently and try and make amends. I have been reading around and I can understand the emotions of people. The level of disappointment and embarrassment is quite heavy.”-Dr Randy Abbey stated.
Two draws and a loss to Cape Verde in the tournament led to Ghana finishing third in Group B, raising questions about the team’s overall play and tactics.
