Asante Kotoko Sporting Club pipped Nsoatraman Football Club 2-1 to win the JA Kufuor CUP after a hard-fought comeback win.
This match was part of the JAK Foundation’s efforts to honor the legacy of former Ghanaian president John Agyekum Kufuor, who served two terms from 2000 to 2008.
The much-anticipated game on the Ghana Football Calendar was greeted with excitement and tumultuous noise from both fans as their euphoria set in.
The match began with both teams wearing identical yellow jerseys, so it is unclear why the authorities did not recognize the fault. However, play was stopped in the 25th minute to allow Kotoko to change into their white strip for easier identification.
Nsoatraman FC’s talented player, Abdul Rahman, scored the opening goal in the first half, putting them ahead until halftime.
The game remained intense until the 57th minute, when Steven Mukwala of Kotoko, a striker from Uganda, tied the score.
As the match went on, Nsoatreman was awarded a penalty, but Manaf Umar’s attempt was stopped by goalkeeper Frederick Asare, keeping Kotoko in the contest.
The Porcupine Warriors had the last laugh when, in the 67th minute, Peter Amidu scored a skillfully constructed goal that was assisted by Richmond Lamptey to secure the crucial victory for Kotoko.
This guaranteed the Porcupine Warriors’ triumph and allowed them to place the eagerly awaited laurel in the cabinet.
