On Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Flagstaff House, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana, threw an exclusive reception for representatives of the Black Queens.
Despite a 3-3 draw in Ndola on Wednesday, Ghana was not able to advance to the fourth and final round of qualifiers after losing 1-0 to the Copper Queens in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Queens officials were led by Dr. Gifty Oware-Mensah, the Chair of the Management Committee and a member of the Executive Council. Others were team manager Hannah Asare and Black Queens head coach Nora Häuptle.
The Chief of Staff was represented by Hon. Freda Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Tano North, and Jamaldeen Alhassan, Personal Assistant to the Minister of Youth and Sports.
Following their tenacious performance against Zambia in the Olympic Games third-round qualifying match, the Black Queens returned to Ghana on Friday, March 1, 2024.
The Chief of Staff lauded the efforts of the team and urged them to keep pushing for honors in the rebuilding process. She also rewarded the teams’ effort with an unspecified financial commitment and promised to do more as the team prepares for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Chief of Staff also vowed to do everything in her power to support the advancement of women’s national teams and women’s football.
Ghana’s four women’s national teams are officially registered to compete in FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) events. Black Damsels, Black Maidens, Black Princesses, and Black Queens are a few among them.
The 13th African Games in Accra, 2024, will feature a women’s football competition between the national U-20 team, also called the Black Princesses.
