William Amponsah, a Ghanaian long-distance runner, won a silver medal in the men’s 10,000-meter race during Friday morning’s events at the ongoing African Games in Accra.
In an astounding time of one hour, five minutes, and thirteen seconds (1:05:13), Amponsah—who currently holds the national record for the 10,000 meters—completed the race at the University of Ghana campus.
With his outstanding performance, he was only nine seconds behind Eritrean athlete Amare Hailemicael, who won the gold. With a time of 1:05:37, Isaac Mpofu of Zimbabwe claimed the bronze medal.
In contrast, Amponsah’s countryman, Koogo Atia, finished in fifteenth place with a time of 1:12:14.
Amponsah set a new national record in the men’s 10,000-meter event, even though he finished fifth, before his success in the half marathon.
His time of 29:51.99, which was 2.79 seconds faster than his previous record set in 2020, demonstrated his unwavering dedication to being the best on the track.
With multiple medals won, including the Black Princesses victory over Nigeria, Ghanaians are now progressively moving up the medal table ladder.
