Ghana defeated Uganda in the battle for gold in the men’s football competition at the 2023 African Games on Friday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Satellites’ lone goal of the match was scored by Jerry Afriyie, who made sure they would repeat their valiant performance at the 2011 tournament in Maputo.
Ghana had a great start to the match and appeared to have taken the lead inside 20 minutes, but the referee disallowed it due to a foul inside the box.
Both sides had a few good opportunities in the first half, but no team was able to break the tie.
The Black Satellites carried on with their dominance and brought the game to the Ugandans in the second half.
Ghana continued to press for the winner, but the final piece remained the missing puzzle.
With only a few more seconds remaining, Desmond Ofei’s team had the breakthrough.
After receiving a pass close to the edge of the box, Afriyie struck brilliantly low to beat the goalie of Uganda and give Ghana the lead.
At the end of the competition, satellites maintained their composure to secure gold.
Senegal took home the bronze, while Uganda had to set with silver.
