Since changing his nationality to play for Ghana, Inaki Williams has acknowledged that things haven’t gone as planned. The attacker for Athletic Bilbao, though, stated that he had no regrets about forgoing Spain to play for his parents’ nation.
Williams was born in Europe to Ghanaian immigrants, and he later played youth international football for Spain.
The Bilbao forward formally changed his nationality in June 2022, and he represented Ghana at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
With just one goal in his 17 international matches, the forward’s career with Ghana has not gone as planned, as the Black Stars have lost their previous two major championships in the group stages.
Williams asserts that he has no regrets about his decision to play for Ghana, saying that it has brought him some of the best experiences of his life.
“I would never have imagined this. I had to make a decision and I don’t regret being able to represent the country of my parents and my family, to go back to my origins, to be able to travel more and see my loved ones in Ghana,” Williams told Club del Deportista.
“It’s true that things didn’t work out as we’d all hoped, but it’s true that on a sporting and personal level, it helped me a lot. In fact, I think I’m in one of my best moments thanks to this decision.” he added.
At the club level, Williams has been scoring goals for fun, contributing 11 goals and five assists this season despite his patchy performance for Ghana.
