In response to rumors that Arsenal might sell Thomas Partey this summer, Mikel Arteta has praised the midfield player and indicated he wants to keep him.
The 30-year-old has been continuously linked to a move; big-money moves to Juventus or Saudi Arabia have been mentioned as possibilities.
In Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Luton, Partey made his first start since August. His return to fitness has bolstered the Gunners heading into the final stretch. The Ghanaian international, who missed 19 games due to a hamstring injury, can challenge Declan Rice and Jorginho in central midfield.
Given that his current contract with Arsenal expires in June 2025, Partey’s return to the team has raised additional concerns about his long-term future.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Brighton, Arteta stated: “He would better have his head here because we are playing for big things.” Partey also hinted that he wants to stay longer at Arsenal after the Luton game. Arterta continued,
We need him. He’s a top player and important for us, you could see the other day on the pitch the impact that he can have for us.”
When asked if there was a new contract, Arteta said: “He’s our player, he’s got one more year’s contract, and I’m really happy with him.”
The Ghanaian also stated emphatically on Wednesday that his main goal is to support Arsenal as they attempt to win the Premier League for the first time in 20 years. He said,
“My head is always here,” he said. “This is where I choose to play, I’m really happy every time I’m on the field.
Atletico Madrid traded Partey to Arsenal in October 2020 for a sum of £45 million. Although he has made 108 appearances, he has only managed five goals and four assists while battling recurring injuries in recent seasons.
