Kofi Kinaata, a well-known highlife figure in Ghana, is concerned about the future of the young people in Takoradi in the Western region.
On Wednesday’s Asempa FM Ekosii Sen program, the musician, who was born Martin King Arthur, shared his feelings.
He admitted that Takoradi is under construction but argued that a city like Takoradi should not be under construction right now given its industrial makeup and volume of businesses.
He also said that most Ghanaians probably did not even know about Takoradi until some musicians from the city began to promote the area.
He added that Takoradi lacks indoor spaces for programs and larger gatherings. He said,
“I am not sure someone outside Ghana even knows there is a place called Western region but for the Takoradi people and myself who make noise through songs to put the area on the world map.
He also expressed his displeasure at the fact that most young people feel they have no future in the city due to the authorities’ disregard for it, forcing them to relocate in search of better opportunities elsewhere.
“The majority of my peers have moved on because they do not see a future. He sighed, “The only people you see are the little ones, like my nieces and nephews, who I am sure will leave when they grow up too.
According to Kofi Kinaata, the neighborhood’s development is unimpressive, and the locals feel abandoned.
“I have observed that road construction and other projects are ongoing, but I do not believe the development is significantly up to par with the local resources. At the moment, even if you want a place like a theatre to hold an event, there is none,” he added.
The Takoradi-based musician noted that he does not talk about the developmental issues in the region because he gets emotional and may go out of line. People may believe he is attempting to irritate the authorities when this occurs.
The interview forms part of the radio tour of his EP ” Kofioo Kofi”.
