At Ngyirasia, a community in the Essikadu Ketan Constituency in the Western Region, a premix fuel explosion resulted in sixteen injuries, two of whom have passed away.
According to reports, the explosion happened on Saturday, May 18, 2024, around 4:00 p.m., while some fishermen were walking along the beach carrying gallons of premix fuel to their canoes.
It is suspected that the fuel may have caught fire from a nearby fish oven.
The two dead victims, Joseph Adom, 15, and Justice Dadzie, 7, were receiving treatment at Effia-Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi when they passed away from their wounds, according to Gabriel Ato Mensah, the Assembly Member for Ngyirasia-Mempeasem.
We counted 16 victims, 11 of whom were men and 5 of whom were women. We took the three to Saint Benedict Hospital at Inchaban after bringing the other thirteen to Effia-Nkwanta, where treatment was initiated. I took them to the hospital and later had to join the chief.
“Upon my return, two of the victims—Isaac Blankson, 55, and Joseph Adom, 15—had been brought to the theater. The other 11 were also receiving treatment at the emergency ward.”
“When we arrived this morning, we discovered that Joseph Adom had passed away. So we went to the morgue to see the lifeless body. I have been here with the chief since the morning, and at three of the clock in the afternoon, we lost another one, a seven-year-old named Justice Dadzie,” he said.
The assembly member continued, saying that two more injured people were being sent to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to receive additional care.
The incident involved two stationary vehicles, a Land Rover and an Opel Astra, as well as some nearby wooden structures. Meanwhile, authorities are still investigating the explosion.
