At least 40 people are reported to have died in an ambush in Zurak village, Bashar District, Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The gunmen reportedly invaded the community in large numbers and killed many residents, including members of the Vigilance Corps.
On Tuesday, a resident told reporters that the incident happened on Monday at around 5 p.m. when people were going about their regular lives.
The inadequate communication network in the area, according to the source, prevented them from reporting the incident right away.
Sahpi’i Sambo, a community youth leader who also verified the incident, revealed that the bandits entered the community on motorcycles—two of them on a single bike—armed with high-tech weapons and began intermittent shooting.
“Over 40 people lost their lives, and many were injured,” he said. Residents of the village have fled to neighboring communities for cover.
“As of yesterday, security personnel had not yet arrived at the community. It was deadly,” Mr Sambo said. At the time of reporting, the state government and the security services had not yet responded to the incident.
