Favour Ugwuka, a final-year student at Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki, is said to have killed herself.
According to sources, Miss Favour killed herself in her dorm at the university’s Ishieke Campus in the state capital of Abakaliki.
Subsequent inquiries disclosed that the deceased individual was a final-year English Department student who had passed every course but kept failing a specific one, the lecturer of which had sworn she would never pass.
In a depressing video clip that our correspondent found online, a mother of the deceased, purportedly, accused a lecturer of pressuring her daughter to end her life.
“Dr. Enyi said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him,” the woman, seen in the video, claimed with regret. The man ought to come and pick up my suicidal daughter.”
Furthermore, the girl committed suicide, according to Rex Nwome, an institution graduate, because she had been failing the specific course on a regular basis.
He stated, “In the English Department, Favor was both my classmate and my closest friend. The above-mentioned lecturer did vow never to allow Favour to graduate.
“You could imagine where she later passed all the courses except that lecturer’s that, she had to pay another extra year tuition fee to rewrite.
Sadly, the man let her down once more. Her name was not on the most recent NYSC shortlist, which is what caused this acute depression.”
He went on, “The girl was left to wander around EBSU in search of assistance, which caused her to suffer a great deal of depression. She was very desperate to graduate and serve. This suicide mission was the result of numerous other repulsive stories, including this one.
“I wish she didn’t go this far to end her life. R. I. P. Ugwuka Favor until we cross paths again.”
The Ebonyi Command of the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident, on Thursday.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Joshua Ukandu, told our correspondent that the matter was reported to the headquarters.
He said, “Yes, the command received the report of suicide by a female student.”The police claim that their attempts to get a response from the university were unsuccessful.
