Following the Black Starlets’ failure to advance to the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced that it has accepted Laryea Kingston’s resignation as head coach.
This loss cost the team a spot in the upcoming AFCON tournament.
The resignation comes after Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Burkina Faso at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, May 25, during the WAFU B Championship semi-finals.
At a press conference held after the game, Kingston—who was appointed head coach in April—expressed his disappointment.
“I know Ghanaians know me as a player and are familiar with the sacrifices I made for the country during my playing days. I gave my all as a player, but in the end, I wasn’t happy,” Kingston said. He added, “Within these past seven months as Head Coach, I’ve given my all. I decided when we came back from Russia that I would resign after the WAFU competition. The explanation will come later.”
The GFA released a statement outlining the events leading up to Kingston’s resignation. They noted that he did not show up for the evening meeting with the Management Committee and that he had abandoned the team bus on the way to the team hotel. He has since not reported back to the team hotel.
Assistant coaches Nana Agyemang and Jacob Nettey will lead the team in the forthcoming third-place playoff match against Nigeria, which is set for Tuesday, May 28, 2024, according to the GFA.
In the CAF Champions League in 2000, Nettey, a former captain of Hearts of Oak, guided the team to victory.
Additionally, he competed for Ghana in some international tournaments, such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996.
