John Dramani Mahama, the former president of Ghana, has listed several steps he plans to take to cut back on government spending.
According to the former president, government officials receiving freebies are at the root of Ghana’s problems.
At a meeting with the EU Ambassador in Ghana, John Dramani Mahama observed that these freebies put a strain on public coffers.
“Top government officials, directors, and the political class will no longer be required to pay for fuel, utilities, DSTV, and other necessities as a condition of employment. In our opinion, people ought to start paying their own water and electricity bills, just like every other Ghanaian.
“If you are driving your car, you should purchase your fuel unless you are on government assignment or using a government vehicle. And so we are going to discontinue that.”
John Mahama previously declared that should he be elected president of Ghana, he would see to it that the flooding issues in the nation’s capital were resolved.
