Declaring the Democracy Cup open in honor of its 30th anniversary was Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin.
At the Accra Sports Stadium on July 5, 2024, Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak will compete for the Democracy Cup.
The maiden tournament winner will have the opportunity to play in Washington later this year against DC United, a club with its headquarters in the United States.
Speaker Bagbin urged the populace to preserve the democracy that sports provide for the enjoyment of all. He added that the event has been adopted as part of the annual event to strengthen democracy.
In a succinct speech, GFA President Kurt Okraku Mantey promised the teams’ availability and urged significant investment in the sports industry. Agyenim Boateng, the chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee, also pushed for its scalability and inclusion of lesser-known teams.
Frank Annoh Dompreh, the chief whip for the majority, and Ahmed Ibrahim, the deputy minority chief whip, advocated for funding and national exposure for lesser-known sports.
Present at the launch on Thursday were Members of Parliament, media representatives, and officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), and other stakeholders.
