A soldier serving under the 14 Brigade Headquarters, Goodluck Ebele shot himself dead in the Ohafia barracks near Ngwa High School, Abayi, Osisioma local government area, Abia State.
According to The Nation, the soldier, a senior non-commissioned officer, Command Sergeant Major (CSM), identified only as Vitalis, took his own life in front of the FOB gate.
The reason for his suicide in front of the army camp was unknown at the time of this report, as no suicide note was found.
Sources within security agencies in the state told the publication that a discreet investigation would be conducted to uncover what may have prompted him to take his own life
Reports indicate that before the soldier’s death, there were no documented instances of domestic violence or disciplinary actions taken against him by military authorities at either the Battalion or 14 Brigade Headquarters.
The CSM’s untimely demise has raised concerns, as efforts to contact him by colleagues and military officials proved unsuccessful. His return to the army camp and subsequent suicide came as a shock to his fellow soldiers.
The deceased was due to retire in October, leaving his colleagues bewildered by his decision to end his life.
