As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality, the tourism industry has a critical role to play in promoting sustainable practices that benefit local communities and preserve our planet’s natural wonders.
In this spirit, a group of tourism marketing students of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNIMAC IJ) by name “RoamRovers” have organized a sustainability tour to Afadjato and Wli waterfalls, two of Ghana’s most breathtaking natural attractions on Saturday 10th August 2024.This initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable tourism and its positive impacts on local economies, cultures, and the environment.
Afadjato and Wli Waterfalls: A Treasure Trove of Natural Beauty
Located in the Volta Region of Ghana, Afadjato and Wli waterfalls are two of the country’s most stunning natural attractions. Afadjato, the highest mountain in Ghana, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, while Wli waterfalls, one of the highest waterfalls in West Africa, is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
These natural wonders are not only a source of pride for Ghana but also a significant contributor to the local economy.
Nuku Arts: The hub of environmental sustainability
Nuku Art situated in Liate-Wote is art centre devoted to sustainability and recycling where ordinary rubbish is transformed into exceptional works of art by local artists and students, fostering a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable community.
Through recycling which involves collecting and converting waste materials into useable, fresh materials, the environment presents a beneficial way of solid waste management for a sustainable society, as opposed to dumping it in landfills. Recycling non-renewable resources reduces pollution and protects natural habitats.
Nuku Art unequivocally stands as a hub of adventure and environmental sustainability.
The Importance of Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable tourism is an approach that prioritizes the well-being of local communities, respects the environment, and promotes cultural heritage. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), sustainable tourism can generate up to 10% of global GDP and create one in every 10 jobs worldwide.
Moreover, sustainable tourism can help reduce poverty, protect biodiversity, and preserve cultural diversity.
The sustainability tour, organized the RoamRovers offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Afadjato and Wli waterfalls while promoting sustainable tourism practices. The tour will take participants on a guided hike to the summit of Afadjato, followed by a visit to Wli waterfalls where they will have the opportunity to swim in the natural pool and enjoy the scenic surroundings.
Throughout the tour, excursionists will be encouraged to adopt sustainable practices, such as: Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling waste using eco-friendly transportation, learning local cultures and traditions as well as supporting local businesses and communities.
