The Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif appeared before the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, August 19, 2024, to answer to questions pertaining to the All African Games which was hosted in Ghana as well as other sports related issues.
All African Games 2023
The Sports Minister revealed that the government paid the national broadcaster that is, the Ghana Broadcasting Cooperation an amount totalling to $3 million for the coverage of the 2023 African Games.
This was the answer he gave the Public Accounts Committee when he was asked by the MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, to give an account of the budget allocated for the coverage.
“GBC was the official broadcaster for the 13th All African Games, and I can confirm that full payment has been made to GBC. I can’t remember the exact amount but I know that it is in the excess of $3 million.” Honourable Mustapha Ussif.
As revealed by the MP Sam George, some of the technicians who worked during the African Games had claimed that they had still not been pai and further clarification will be made on what is owed them when the Committee sits again.
The minister of sports also stated that the government owes about twenty-eight hotels for services provided during the Games. While some have been paid, others are yet to receive their money. Mustapha Ussif assured that the remaining hotels will also receive payment shortly, stating that some had already received payment.
Sports Infrastructure in Ghana
It was revealed that a sum of $195 was used on infrastructure for the African Games, which took place between February and March.
According the the Sports Minister, the government plans to build a Regional Stadium that meets the CAF standard in all new six regions in Ghana.
He further revealed that five Sports Centres have been built so far by the government and they are on course to complete the construction of five more.
