District Chief Executive for Wassa East, Wilson Arthur has reiterated his commitment to help eradicate the galamsey menace in the area. In a fervent speech at a recent Townhall Meeting in Daboase, Mr Arthur warned that no traditional authority shall be spared should they be caught engaging in illegal mining.
Two traditional authorities in some months ago; an Odekro [chief] and Tufohene in Odoben, a village along the Pra River in Wassa East District of the Western Region, were invited by the police for allegedly engaging and abating the activities of illegal mining in their community.
Mr Wilson Arthur charged that the fight against illegal mining be taken as collective action by the people.
“Galamsey is a local problem. If the community, the chief and authorities protest the operations of illegal mining in their rivers or communities, no one could ever attempt to”, he said.
“The lands are for chiefs. These miners are always in your communities. The chiefs by their actions or inactions fuel the illegal activities. We have intelligence on that and its terrible”, he lamented.

Mr Arthur added “in a strategic response o the situation, some youth and chiefs were selected by the assembly to undergo training on best mining practices at the University if Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa”
