The Republic of Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Sports is happy to announce that from Saturday, November 9 to Sunday, November 10, 2024, Ghana will host the 2024 Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Tournament.
It will be the first time that West Africa hosts this esteemed continental championship, and it will be held in Accra as a qualifier for the 2025 Challenger Series.
Twelve national women’s teams, including the defending champions South Africa, Kenya, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Ghana, Mauritius, Uganda, Zambia, Senegal, and Cote d’Ivoire, will compete in the event, which is being organised by Rugby Africa, the continent’s rugby governing organisation.
All Ghanaians and visitors from abroad will be able to witness the event because entrance is free.
Each side has seven players, and matches last two halves of seven minutes each. The Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens is a top continental championship that follows the fast-paced sevens style.
In addition to crowning Africa’s champions, the 2024 competition will give the top three teams a chance to advance to the 2025 Challenger Series, a global rugby sevens qualification.
This accomplishment demonstrates rugby’s rising prominence in Ghana and throughout West Africa, especially in advancing women’s sports. Under His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s direction, the Ghanaian government has been a steadfast supporter of gender equality in sports and the expansion of sports facilities.
Organising this competition is an important step in establishing Ghana as a developing location for international sporting events and demonstrating the nation’s dedication to assisting women in sports.
The University of Ghana’s Rugby Stadium, West Africa’s first purpose-built rugby stadium, will host the games. The 2023 African Games venue, which was finished earlier this year, is a testament to the area’s commitment to promoting sports growth.
The competition will serve as a chance to showcase Ghana’s ability to organize important athletic events and encourage increased rugby participation throughout the region.
This competition will provide a stage for showcasing the power, tenacity, and talent of female athletes as Ghana gets ready to host rugby teams and supporters from all around Africa. It is anticipated to garner a lot of interest and help raise awareness of women’s rugby around the continent.
