United States president Donald Trump has signed an executive order which aims to ban transgender athletes from taking part in female related sports.
The order aims to ban transgender athletes from competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams by denying federal funds for schools that allow it.
Failure to follow the order will result in federal funds being denied to schools that allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s teams. Despite facing backlash for his decision, Trump isn’t done yet. The Trump administration is aiming to pressure the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to implement a uniform transgender athlete ban.
The US President had previously signed orders targeting trans people’s participation in the military and gender affirming health care which has been described as ‘catastrophic’ by LGBTQ+ organisations.
