Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, known by her stage name Ebony Reigns, was a Ghanaian dancehall and afrobeats sensation whose promising career was tragically cut short in a fatal car accident on February 8, 2018. Eight years later, her legacy remains alive, with her music continuing to captivate fans in Ghana and beyond.
Ebony made a remarkable entry into the Ghanaian music industry in 2015 under RuffTown Records, quickly gaining recognition with hits like Kupe, Poison, Sponsor, Hustle, and Maame Hwɛ. Her fearless persona, dynamic voice, and distinctive style set her apart, making her one of the most influential female artists of her time. Sadly, her journey was cut short at just 20 years old.
Though her time in the industry was brief, Ebony left an indelible mark on Ghanaian music. In 2018, she made history as the first female artist to win Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) posthumously. Her music, which often addressed social issues like domestic violence and women’s empowerment, continues to inspire and resonate with audiences.
Every year, fans, musicians, and industry players pay tribute to Ebony through concerts, social media dedications, and special events. RuffTown Records, led by Bullet, has continuously honored her contributions, while her father, Nana Opoku Kwarteng, has worked to preserve her memory through the Ebony Reigns Foundation.
Seven years after her passing, Ebony’s influence remains strong in Ghana’s music scene. Her songs still feel fresh, and her trailblazing efforts continue to inspire female artists in the male-dominated dancehall genre. Though she is no longer here, her music ensures that Ebony Reigns forever.
