Authorities at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Ghana Police Service have launched investigations into the tragic death of a fourth-year student on campus.
According to an official statement from KNUST, security personnel discovered the lifeless body of Miss Joana Deladem Yabani, a Level 400 Biological Science student, near the university’s Disability and Rehabilitation Centre at approximately 5:00 a.m. on February 27, 2025. The body was immediately transported to the University Health Services, where medical professionals confirmed her death.
In response, the university management expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public of an ongoing comprehensive investigation. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID), KNUST Internal Security, and University Health Services are collaborating to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, a separate press release from the Ghana Police Service has revealed that preliminary examinations of the deceased’s body indicated signs of violence. The police have since arrested a suspect, identified as Daniel Tuffour, who is currently in custody assisting with investigations.
The police report also noted that Yabani’s body was found behind the Central Laboratory, contrary to KNUST’s earlier statement placing her near the Disability and Rehabilitation Centre. She was pronounced dead at the scene by medical officials from KNUST Hospital before being transported to the hospital morgue for further examination and autopsy.
The Inspector-General of Police has personally engaged with the victim’s family, assuring them that justice will be served. Additionally, discussions are underway between the police and KNUST management on enhancing security measures within the university community.
The authorities have urged students and the general public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information as investigations continue. Updates will be provided as new details emerge.
