Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has released a statement expressing his profound gratitude to the nation following the announcement of his replacement.
In a statement issued today, Dr. Dampare conveyed his thanks to “the Almighty God and the good people of Ghana for their prayers, blessings and support during his time in office.” This follows the government’s announcement on Thursday, March 13, 2025, that he would be stepping down from his position.
Dr. Dampare acknowledged the “considerable show of love and support” he has received from across Ghana and the world in the past 24 hours. He extended specific appreciation to former President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo for appointing him as IGP, highlighting the historical significance of being the youngest IGP in the Fourth Republic. He also thanked current President John Dramani Mahama for their “cordial working relationship.”
The former IGP also expressed gratitude to various religious and traditional leaders, heads of sister security agencies, civil society organizations, and the international community for their support and guidance throughout his tenure.
A significant portion of his statement was dedicated to the Ghana Police Service, where he served for 35 years. “He is particularly grateful for the opportunity to serve the Ghana Police Service for the past 35 years; rising in rank from a General Constable to Inspector-General of Police,” the statement read. He emphasized his service as Director-General of various departments and his record two stints as DG/Welfare and DG/Administration. He thanked the Police Management Board (POMAB) and all members of the service.
Dr. Dampare acknowledged the “incredible opportunity” to serve as IGP, the highest rank attainable for a police officer, and commended the “enormous” contribution of the police service to security and law and order during his tenure.
Concluding his statement, Dr. Dampare reiterated his “continuous commitment to Ghana” and his “willingness to serve the nation that he loves.” He emphasized his “unblemished record” and his continued energy and enthusiasm to serve with “discipline, honour and integrity.”
The statement was signed by Nana Osei Afrifa, Executive Assistant, and included contact information for Dr. Dampare.
This statement marks the end of Dr. Dampare’s tenure as IGP, a period marked by significant reforms and public attention. The nation now awaits the announcement of his successor and the future direction of the Ghana Police Service.
