Wilberforce Mfum, a legendary Ghanaian footballer has given Black Stars coach Chris Hughton some insightful advise, urging him to pick Ghana’s team wisely for the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
Mfum, a pivotal member of Ghana’s AFCON-winning squad in 1963, underlined the need of refraining from selecting idle players for the national squad. He said that players who are hungry to play locally and are prepared to give their all for the nation shouldn’t be given preference over those who don’t get much playing time at the club level.
The legendary football player expressed his dissatisfaction with the Black Stars’ recent performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Madagascar.
He emphasized that the squad is not playing up to its standing as one of the strongest in African football and demanded that training be taken more seriously.
“If the officials at GFA or the coaches are the ones making the selection, the press has to say it. Because the squad I see now is not good.Recently when the team played in Kumasi, if you watched carefully you will ask yourself if this is indeed the Black Stars. They should be serious at training,” Legendary Wilberforce Mfum remarked.
It is anticipated that Black Stars Head Coach Chris Hughton names his squad this month ahead of the AFCON 2023 which will be played in January – February 2024.
