Ghana’s U-20 women’s team, known as the Black Princesses, won their 11th gold medal in the current African Games on Thursday night at the Cape Coast Stadium after rallying from behind to defeat Nigeria in extra time.
Goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku misplayed an innocuous pass in the penalty box, letting Edeh Njideka seize the opportunity to put Nigeria ahead in the 23rd minute, sending the Ghanaians behind early.
Yussif Basigi’s girls finally broke through in the 77th minute when Tracy Twum found space on the left side and shot into the roof of the net, to the cheers of a boisterous Cape Coast crowd. Ghana was level at 1-1.The match went into extra time after no team could win in regulation time.
The winning goal was scored by Mukarama Abdulai in the ninth minute of extra time. She did this by controlling a lovely pass inside the box and then hitting a low shot into the bottom corner.
This is Ghana’s second gold medal in the African Games women’s football competition. The team was led by the same man, Yussif Basigi, when they won gold in the football competition in 2015.
