Legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Abraham Amabila has said President Akufo-Addo and his government have failed in the fight against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.[ads2]
According to him, the President must as soon as possible apologise to Ghanaians for failing to eradicate galamsey activities in the country.
This comes after the President’s meeting with the National House of Chiefs and MMDCEs in Kumasi on October 5 to ponder on how best to curb the galamsey menace which is affecting water bodies in the country.
In that meeting, Pesident Akufo-Addo charged the traditional leaders to desist from giving out lands for illegal mining as the government roll out measures to fight against the menace.[ads3]
The President said it is the responsibility of the government and traditional leaders to protect the lands of the country from illegal small scale miners in order to protect the heritage for the next generation.
But Amabila believes the meeting was useless because several of such meetings were organized in the past but the problem has not be solved.
“The president is a pretender, he created the impression as if this is the first time he is hearing about these galamsey matters.
“The meeting at Manhyia was a useless closed door meeting with the chiefs,” he said, and added that “The president has failed in one of his duties, he should apologize to the people that he intended well but he has been overwhelmed”, he said while speaking on TV3’s The Key Point Show.[ads4]
