Former Ghanaian football captain, Asamoah Gyan, has questioned the novelty of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) proposed 24-hour economy policy, suggesting that the concept already exists. Speaking via an Instagram Live session on January 2, 2025, Gyan noted that several institutions in Ghana currently operate on a 24-hour basis.
“It already exists. Police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate on a 24-hour basis,” Gyan stated. He further challenged the government to clarify its intent behind the policy, asserting, “If the government says ‘24-hour economy,’ they should say that they will improve it. It’s not a new policy.”
Gyan’s remarks have sparked widespread discussion, as the former footballer joins the list of public figures scrutinizing the NDC’s plans for economic transformation. The policy, which has been a cornerstone of the NDC’s campaign narrative, is aimed at boosting productivity and expanding economic activities throughout the day and night.
The 24-hour economy proposal has been met with mixed reactions. While proponents argue that it could enhance job creation, improve service delivery, and attract foreign investment, critics like Gyan contend that it must be more than a rebranding of existing practices.
The NDC is yet to issue a formal response to Gyan’s remarks. However, party insiders have hinted that the policy focuses on enhancing infrastructure, expanding the scope of night-time businesses, and ensuring the availability of critical services to drive economic growth.
