Former captain of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Joe Hendricks says Asamoah Gyan lacks leadership qualities and his sudden retirement from the Black Stars won’t have any negative effect on Ghana in the AFCON 2019.
Asamoah Gyan in a statement yesterday announced a permanent retirement from the Black Stars and even asked to be excuse from the AFCON 2019, citing the Black Stars captaincy as the main cause.
Hendricks who captained Kumasi Asante Kotoko to the finals of the maiden edition of the CAF Confederation Cup in 2005 but eventually lost the title to arch rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak believes, Gyan lacks the mental toughness to lead the Black Stars for AFCON glory and stripping off the captaincy is the right decision.
“Asamoah Gyan doesn’t behave as a captain. I realized that some years ago that he lacks leadership qualities and he also lacks the mental capacity to lead the Black Stars as a captain”, Hendricks told Kingdom FM in Takoradi.
“Asamoah Gyan’s retirement will NEVER affect the Black Stars in the AFCON 2019. It’s an insult to the other strikers in the Black Stars to say Asamoah Gyan’s absence will have a negative effect on the Black Stars. He is not the only striker Ghana has”, he concluded.
Meanwhile, head coach of the Black Stars, Kwesi Appiah is expected to announce a 30-provisional squad for the AFCON latest by the close of Tuesday.

Asamoah Gyan is the best striker in Ghana squad for AFCON 2019 and in his absence, Ghana will go nowhere. Coach Kwasi Appiah should come out and apologise to Ghanaians for making such a great mistake in order to make us feel safe in the tournament.
